Yvette Raphael, founder of Apha, sat down with the Bhekisisa Team at Mail&Guardian to discuss the implications of the recent Echo study, and why we should approach the results with caution.
Raphael was responding to the results of a study conducted by The Eivdence for Contraceptive Options and HIV Outcomes (Echo), which found that there was "no substantial difference in HIV risk among women using the three different contraceptive methods — DMPA, the Jadelle Implant and the Copper IUD — that were evaluated."
Raphael that her, "greatest fear is that the results are taken as a sign that nothing needs to change". She further explains, "We of course didn’t need a trial to expose this dire situation and to tell us that new HIV diagnoses in young women are unacceptably high."
