Advocates for the Prevention of HIV in Africa calls on President Cyril Ramaphosa to act urgently on the killing of women in Kempton Park

Advocates for the Prevention of HIV in Africa, an organisation working with young women and girls, is deeply concerned by the fear and grief felt by women, families and communities in the Kempton Park area  and South Africa at large following reports of women being killed.

We call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take urgent and visible action. Women and young women cannot continue living in fear while walking, travelling, working, studying or exercising in their own communities.

We remind the President of the #TotalShutdown demands, when women took to the streets and declared their right to be free from violence and demanded an end to impunity for gender-based violence against women. Those demands remain promises unfulfilled: stronger presidential leadership, accountability, survivor support, shelters, psychosocial care, legal aid, effective policing, prosecution, prevention education, and a coordinated national response.

Gender-based violence and femicide must be treated as the national crisis it is. We demand safety, justice, dignity and action — now.
